The New York Times published an interesting story a couple of days ago claiming $META is avoiding billions in federal taxes because of its data center accounting. “Meta is claiming that the costly A.I. computer chips it buys from companies, including Nvidia, are entitled to a taxpayer-provided discount as part of the experiment.” These tax credits are designed to finance innovation, and there’s an argument that using them for data centers is not really innovation. They’ve shaved off $2B in taxes in 2024, and another $3.6B in 2025. This could obviously have an impact if the IRS decides to claw back these credits. Apparently, some of it may be creative accounting, and we know that Meta is not new to that!
