Some AI accelerator prices have reportedly increased by roughly 20%–50% compared with quotes from just two months ago. Cambricon has also reportedly repriced its next-generation 690 chip by around 20%–30%, while MetaX and Iluvatar CoreX have made similar increases. The problem facing China’s AI chip industry is no longer simply: Can China design an alternative to NVIDIA? The bigger question is: Once you design it, can you secure enough HBM to manufacture it at scale — and at what cost? HBM is increasingly becoming a bottleneck for China’s domestic AI substitution effort. Since the U.S. tightened export controls on certain advanced HBM products to China in December 2024, Chinese chipmakers have incre
